There
are some things you just have to be there and be part of. For me it
began with sailing into Sydney. We've already had a harbour cruise,
sight seeing, been part of the Sydney Hobart race on Boxing Day and
now we're here for the New Year's Eve fireworks; us in our little
boat, here waiting for the party to begin.
Early
in the day a cruise liner came off the Circular Quay dock and
anchored in the harbour (apparently they should have left but bad
weather meant they had to stay in the harbour for an extra night and
they blocked too many expensive views on the cruise liner dock), then
the maritime boats came out and laid out the 'do not cross' exclusion
line buoys (boats can go anywhere up to these lines, but not across
them), more boats were piling into the anchorage looking for a gap to
squeeze in to. There were more bitch wings, more blasts on the horn
and everyone came to claim their spot for the evening or the night if
they were staying. There were charter boats, party boats, big boys
blocking the view, small guys, families, friends and everywhere
(except when they got too close) genial bonhomie.

Flash! bang! ooooo! |
At
4 o'clock we got the call Cathy and Andrew and the children were
coming in on the next ferry from Circular Quay. I went to collect
then in the dinghy being law abiding and wearing my life jacket
(mandatory in NSW when you are in a small boat on your own) and
joined the collection of dinghies waiting to pick up their friends
too. We had a safe transfer of peoples and supplies and then we
could raise our metaphorical drawbridge as the dinghy came back on
board for the night.

Happy New Year |
I
can't write all that happened in the evening or you'd be asleep
before the end of the page suffice to say it was grand. We had fly
pasts, children's fireworks at 9pm, ate salmon and prawns, drank good
red wine and then it was midnight. There were six barges with
fireworks along the centre of the harbour, three up river, three down
river, one which was close to us, fireworks off the bridge, the Opera
House and seven of the city sky scrapers. Brilliant, brilliant. You
could feel the boat shake with each of the bangs. And we were here
to welcome in 2013. Happy New Year.
