Cathy and; me by the pool |
The
forecast promised a weekend of fine weather and Cathy and Andrew had
promised us a weekend of fines wines. A few weeks ago they invited
us to join them on a grape picking weekend in the Hunter Valley which
is two hours north of Sydney. Andrew's boss is a 'hobby grower' with
a few hundred acres under production and each spring offers his key
staff, wine lovers and their friends up to his property to spend
Saturday morning picking his grapes and in return pickers get lunch
and an evening barbecue with plenty of home wine to slurp. Neither
David nor I have ever done this sort of thing before so we'd been
looking forward to doing something very different from our usual
cruising life.
Mid
afternoon Cathy and Andrew picked us up from the fish market and we
joined the traffic jam heading out of the city. Three hours later
and we're in the town of Cessnock in the heart of the Hunter Valley
wine area – vineyards to the left, vineyards to the right for as
far as you can see. There's time for a quick drink by the pool
while the children swim before dinner in our villa and an early
night.
