Yesterday
John and Jane on Circe spotted a wild dingo on the beach – not
ideal when they;d been walking their two small dogs on the beach
earlier. One would make a nice snack for a hungry dingo.

Despite
the reports of aggressive mosquitoes, which had lessened as the
breeze picked up, David and I wanted to go walking to see if we
could spot any wildlife. We prepared with full bush walking gear –
sturdy snake proof boots and mozzie proof long trousers, shirts and
hats – and set off up the track. I didn't know there were
crocodiles this far south, I thought they didn't appear until you
reached Mackay, but here was a notice warning of crocs in the area
and to stay more than 50m from the water's edge. Next to this notice
was the warning of dingos – walk in groups and if you are
surrounded stand back to back with your companion and stare at them
while keeping your arms down. We neither got the chance to stare down
a wild dog or to get the bejeebers frightened out of us by a croc
encounter (though we were ready after our visit to Steve Irwin's zoo
– leap on it's back and hold on for dear life), only the ever
present blood sucking mozzies and walking through thick, oozing mud
to float the dinghy. Still our short walk made us feel like
adventurers in the lesser sense of the word.
Given
our planned pre-dawn start tomorrow morning, we had a quieter evening
with Chilli Heat and Circe coming over for drinks and snacks – more
gourmet food from Bruce – and another very fun evening.
