It's
taken us two and a half days to cross from Cape York to Gove, NT, a
most enjoyable trip of 375nm.
Leaving
Mount Adolphus after breakfast on Wednesday we had a flying start
with wind and current pushing us over 10 knots through the islands at
the top of the cape. West of the Cape the skies cleared to perfect
blue and the sea changed to tropical azure (ie shallow water over
sand). By the afternoon we were drifting across the Endeavour
Straits where sand accumulates into one big shallow patch, I say
drifting as the wind had died and it was only the favourable current
keeping us moving. I didn't mind. I was sitting in the sun reading,
liking the warmth and in no major hurry to reach port before dark.
Also David sets himself the personal challenge to sail and to avoid
turning on the engine until it is absolutely necessary.
For
the next two days we happily sailed across the Gulf in near perfect
conditions and arrived at the entrance to Gove Harbour as the sun was
setting.
