We've
arrived at the island Mount Aldophus 5nm north of Cape York, the most
northerly point of main land Australia, It's been a really fast
sailing day – a little less than 12 hours to cover almost 90nm due
to a vigorous following wind and current with us. When we left
Margaret Bay at dawn our destination was Escape River, but we went
flying past mid afternoon, reluctant to stop when we were going so
well.
Mount
Adolphus is a crescent shaped island open to the west and giving good
protection from the south easterlies with lots of room and good
holding in 6m. We discovered the downside after we'd gone to bed; at
the top of the tide a nasty swell finds it's way into the bay making
it roll like a pig in a puddle of mud.
Tomorrow
we plan to start across the Gulf of Carpentaria to Gove in the
Northern Territory.
