Six
boats left Wanci to make the trip to Hoga this morning. Going out
of the harbour channel at high water and in full daylight was a lot
less scary than coming in in the dark five days ago. With our tanks
full of complimentary diesel we weren't too concerned with the motor
to windward. We used the power to run the water maker.
The
channel entrance into the lagoon at Hoga is wide and deep, as simple
as 'keep the channel marker to port' and then keep left until you
find the 20m patch of sand to drop the anchor in. We fitted in
behind the reef very neatly, away from swell and in good holding.
Hoga
has a dive research station and a small resort which have both put in
mooring balls along the west wall between quarter of a mile and a
mile and a half of the anchorage.
We
came for diving so it would be rude not to use all the facilities –
we were the only boat that went out for a dive this afternoon. Great
diving on a wall of diverse corals, all healthy, sponges, a turtle
and a flathead crocodile fish. The first one we have seen in six
years. I think the last time might have been in Komodo. As our
American friends later said, we were 'stoked' on the quality of what
we saw. Definitely ready for more tomorrow.
