Monday 23 September Gili Air, Lombok

pony and trap transport

seems a good place to relax

..so true
Gili Air is the closest of three small holiday islands off the northwest corner of Lombok probably three miles by sea from Medana bay. However, we'd heard the anchorage was uncomfortable and a lee shore so we chose to take a bemo bus to the public ferry and visit that way.
What can I say about Gili Air? A small, arid, ow level coral island with an unbroken string of restaurants, bars, tour shops, dive shops and guests houses along the sandy coastal road. There aren't any cars on the island, only pony and traps which shift all manner of goods around from visitors and their suitcases to building materials. Gili Air was once a good place for diving but we understand over use has damaged the reefs.
Our visit today was a short one; we walked one way along the road, came back and had lunch and then walked the other way and waited for the ferry back. As a back packer this must be heaven with it's laid back bar style and easy living, parties on the beach at night and glorious sunshine. Sounds just like our cruisin' lifestyle!
