Today we motored out of Kentar
anchorage through 5 miles of stilt houses, abodes made from bamboo,
on a bamboo platform supported by bamboo stilts with a large fishing
net suspended below. These are fishermens' houses where they cast
lines for squid at night. It felt strange to be motoring past
someone's front door although many of them did look abandoned.

Following the squalls the wind picked
up and we were able to sail up the channel between Bintan and Batam
island. Using Google Earth images we'd picked a likely looking spot
on the north of Batam to anchor which would put us at the closest
point to where we are going to cross the Singapore Straits and
continue on to Malaysia tomorrow.
