The
distance from Richards Bay to Durban is an awkward 90nm. Awkward
because it is just too far to complete in daylight. We opted to leave
Richards Bay at 5pm to be settled before the sun set at 7.20pm and
arrived at 6am next day. We had current with us and 30 to 35kts from
behind.
The
entrance in to Durban is straight forward and well lit. Our only
problem was our Raymarine chartplotter had gone on the blink the
moment we left Richards Bay. We had no details . Fortunately we
have Navionics on an android tablet so were able to use this. A
couple of further complications as we lined up on the entrance
channel were to find the starter battery was dead and David had to
jump start from the house batteries and we had the headsail out and a
riding turn on the winch. The solution to free the riding turn was
to turn our bow to the wind to release the pressure on the working
sheet and untangle.

Then
it was simply a case of lining up, turning in and anchoring in front
of the marina until they opened at 7.30am and could direct us to a
berth. After the big storm in October the pontoons are a bit wonky,
and far too short for our length, but we were in and planning to stay
for the minimum time.
