Castillo
San Felipe proudly guards the city and is reported to have never been
breached. It was built after Francis Drake attacked and took the
city around the beginning of the 17th century. It's the
biggest fort in the Caribbean and much of it has been restored in the
last 50 years.
We
set off with our buddies from Mister X for an afternoon of
exploration.
Set
on a hill with dominating views over the old and new cities it's an
impressive monument with secrets. Secret tunnels run under it to
exits at the waterline. Some were to move people and goods in and
out, others were designed to be used as explosive packed booby traps
to stop invaders – blowing them up from below.

We
spent more than two hours walking every walk, walking every tunnel
that was open. Having a torch was most useful, especially when David
wanted to go past the 'closed for maintenance' signs and got his feet
wet. In the later afternoon sun the colours changed to warmer and
more magical.
Following
our busy afternoon as tourists we went in to the area called
Getsemani to Vino y Tapas bar for more tapas and wine by the glass.
The Spanish influence remains strong.
