Saturday
and listening to the daily press briefings we know that there is
minimal community transfer of Coronavirus on the island, the laws and
advice to Stay Home Caymanians seems to be working. I'm a restless
native who likes to be out and about, off the boat if possible, and
there were no toilet rolls in stock at our nearest supermarket. All
good excuses to persuade David we need to cycle to Cost U Less three
miles away.
We
load the bikes into the dinghy, call port security for clearance to
proceed, travel 400m to the dock, offload bikes, assemble and begin
our cycle to the big box store. That is until a police car pulls us
over less than 200m from the dock. The officer gets out of his big
truck, face mask under his chin, and asks where we're going. David
explains and then the officer says the police received a phone call
to report illegal maritime activity. Someone saw us in our dinghy
and called 911 to dob us in. He asks for our names and address. I
show our photo ID and David points at Jackster. We see the penny
drop in the officer's eyes. You live on a boat? Yes. We have
permission from port security. He makes a phone call and proclaims
there is no charge to answer we are free to go. This is the second
time someone has called the police to report us. Does someone have a
vendetta against us? Not like yachties?
When
we reach Cost U Less I find the needed toilet rolls and a couple of
other items I didn't know we wanted and David finds half price Easter
chocolates.
