1 August Streets of Annapolis

There is plenty of history waiting to be discovered on the old streets of Annapolis. The early English colonists recalled the City of London names such as Cornhill, site of the Bank of England, Chancery and Fleet Streets.

The Maryland State building is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use in the US dating to 1772. It was the US capital between 1783 and 1784 and the ratification of the end of the Revolutionary war was signed here. It also claims the largest wooden dome in the US constructed without nails – due to the nail tax in force at the time. A tax levied by the government who were paying for the construction?

The brick building in the grounds of the State building is the Treasury and, according to the information board, the first place in the US to issue paper money.

Of course there is the Naval Academy which provides free university education for future naval officers. It dominates the view to the north of the mooring ball field in Spa Creek. Looking the other way from our cockpit on a Wednesday evening we watched the sailing club races.
