New Year's Eve 2020

Out with the old and in with the new. If only we could say out with Coronavirus and in with a healthy New 2021. Sadly that is not to be and we think of our family and friends at home and friends around the world enduring another lock down. We are so lucky to be on a boat in Antigua where infection rates are low and we have freedom to move around.

The last day was another quiet day for us. I took a stroll around Nelson's Dockyard, went for a swim, pottered a bit, read for a while. The usual. In previous year's English Harbour is The place to be for a party, but not this year. The party may be cancelled, but not the fireworks!

From our spot in Freeman's Bay at the entrance to English Harbour we are in prime position to watch the fireworks display from Fort Berkley. We're anchored about a third of a mile from the fort set on a headland. A couple of centuries ago it guarded the entrance to English Harbour. Luckily for us tonight, we are upwind from it and the rockets and sparks should fall harmlessly into the sea.

As we oldsters are rarely awake at midnight I planned a late dinner in an attempt to stay awake for the fireworks. The plan failed. David had to wake me at 11.45pm. The anchorage is full tonight, at least thirty boats crammed in where there are usually twenty. Some super yachts have moved from the marina in Falmouth to Nelson's Dockyard to give their guests best view and we can see another big yacht holding station outside the harbour.

On cue at midnight the fireworks begin. For ten minutes it's a joyous display of exploding lights and colour and loud bangs. The noise frightens Polly and she begins her New Year from the safety of a dark nook behind the laundry basket.

As the last rocket fades we kiss and wish each other a Happy New year and wish for a better year for everyone and then we head to bed.
