The generator expert, Fred of Fred Marine, spent three hours this afternoon in our engine room trying to find the fault on our Onan generator. He couldn't point at the exact problem and concluded that after 70,000 hours of use it had died of old age and needed to be replaced. The motor runs. It's simply not producing more than 50v of electricity when it should be 230v.
This evening we're not the happiest bunnies in the marina. Tomorrow Fred will give us his bill and an estimate for a replacement. Replacing is a big job as it is the size of a small car engine and weighs about 270kgs. We'll need to ship it a new one from overseas and we'll need a crane on a dock to do the lifting. At least it's solved what to buy David for Christmas this year.
