24 June Friendship Bay, Bequia

When we were here sixteen years ago we were travelling with a group of 8 American and Canadian boats which included Inspiration Lady, Anthem, Boat House, Bristol Rose and Night Hawk. Being young and crazy David and I spent a day walking over a big hill to a bay on the north side of the island which had been a whaling station. Even today Bequians are permitted to hunt whales if they use the traditional hand spearing method from a rowing boat. At a market stall selling scrimshaw whale teeth we were told that there had been one kill earlier this year. The stall also sold orca engraved orca teeth. Needless to say I wasn't buying.

The first time we did the walk it was memorable for our visit to the whaling museum and because we were joined by a local dog we named Brownie. He was a friendly brown dog.

Roll on the years and the hill was much steeper! It was raining lightly and I missed the turn to the beach so a longer than planned trip. As compensation for my error I insisted we stop for a cold beer, or two, at the smart new hotel on the beach. Despite us turning up looking like bedraggled sailors we were given a warm welcome. Such lovely people!

No dog for company today but it's still a lovely walk.

Later this evening we experienced strong winds in the anchorage. A reminder that we are three weeks into the official hurricane season. We have started to watch the development of a low moving west across the Atlantic. It is very early in the season for this to happen.
