Martinique is a large island and you can buy most items on your wish list. On my wish list for the last couple of years has been carpet to replace our much used and tied ones. Most houses in the Caribbean have tiled floors so finding a carpet supplier hasn’t been an easy task...until now.
We were recommended to visit a home furnishing company called Tonton Deco; the same company where we bought Sunbrella fabric in Guadeloupe. We hired a car for a couple of days and set off with a long wish list. Tonton Deco. Bingo! They have a large selection of carpets and just what we required in stock. Before purchase we hadn’t considered how a roll of carpet would fit in a small rental car but with some crafty folding we got it in.
Back at the marina we lay the new carpet on the dock and using the old carpets as templates cut the new pieces. Fitted in Jackster they look amazing – brighter, softer, no rips, no holes. ideally we would have cut the sizes and had the edges whipped. However, the only man who could do the job was on holiday in France and won't be back before September. So I will buy binding tape on my next trip home and sew it on later.

On our trip to the carpet shop we also picked up a thin industrial carpet for the dinghy floor. No, we’re not that posh! It’s to stop Polly sharpening her claws on the soft rubber flooring and ripping it to shreds.
