A very short hop around the corner – no time to even lift the cup of
tea to my lips it was so close – into Refuge Bay and another beach
with a waterfall. Into the kayak once more and up to the beach which
we discovered has a history.
It
was from this bay and this beach Operation Jaywick was trained and
launched. Operation Jaywick was a special operation undertaken in
WW2. In September 1943, 14 commandos and sailors from Z Special Unit
raided Japanese shipping in Singapore harbour, sinking seven ships.
There's a plaque to commemorate the event and their vessel, Krait, on
a rock they carved their names into 70 years ago. On the other side
of the beach is a larger rock with names of boats that visited this
bay going back to the 1920's. It might have been the inspiration for
Operation Jaywick members to add their monikers.
