Wednesday 27 February Barrenjoey lighthouse

looking north

Barrenjoey lighthouse
On the southern headland of the entrance to Pittwater and Broken Bay is a lighthouse with the wonderful name Barrenjoey. The water under the headland is too shallow to get the big boat in so we left Jackster on a mooring ball at Palm Beach half a mile south and buzzed up in the dinghy to take the short walk to the top. The path has an interesting history; five convicts were given the work detail to construct a winding path up the escarpment, cutting steps and clearing rocks where necessary to provide a footpath to the light house at the summit. Before the footpath there was a cobbled track for horse and cart but the powers that were wanted a footpath too. It's a testament to the constructors grit with steps cut in solid rock and in other places square cut blocks making the steps.
At the top there's a sandstone lighthouse, not the original, and two original buildings, neither occupied at the moment. In the whale migration season it's a popular viewing spot. The sperm whales are due to pass again in a couple of months when they migrate from the Antarctic up into the tropical Pacific to calve and breed.
