It all began at 4am five days ago. I was woken by the sound of Polly scratching in her litter tray and then being sick in the main salon. Of course I had to get up and find her. She was not looking a happy cat. The sick was clear liquid and when she tried to pooh she was struggling, a small mew as she strained. I cleared up and left her with fresh water before going back to bed.
She was very lack lustre all day, not eating and only drinking a small sip, so next morning we took her to a vet. She complained all the way there in the car and was very vocal with the vet. Dr Roy checked her over and couldn't find anything wrong but gave her a laxative to ease her bowels in case there was a fur ball in her stomach which needed help to pass and some pain medication.
Back on the boat all she wanted to do was curl up and sleep in a quiet corner. Next morning was a Saturday and I noticed she was walking awkwardly, her back hunched and favouring her left hind which is the one with three toes missing. On close inspection I found what I thought looked like an abscess under her tail, Dr Roy had said he was on call that weekend and not to hesitate to call if there was a problem. By our good fortune he lives within 5 minutes of the marina and came out for a house call. By the time he arrived the abscess had burst, big gooey, smelly, mess came out leaving a deep cavity. The vet cleaned up the wound, gave Polly a shot of antibiotics and a pain medication. Within 10 minutes she was drinking and eating. It must have been very painful.
Our final vet visit was two days later and all is healing well, just as well as we are due to leave the marina tomorrow.
